Shipping Puppies to Austria from Germany
As both Germany and Austria are EU member states, the movement of puppies between the two countries is relatively straightforward under EU Regulation 576/2013 on the non-commercial movement of pet animals.
EU Internal Movement
Within the European Union, dogs can travel between member states provided they have a valid EU Pet Passport, are microchipped, and have a current rabies vaccination. Since our German hub issues EU Pet Passports as standard, puppies are well-documented for intra-EU travel.
Rabies Vaccination
Puppies must be vaccinated against rabies at a minimum age of 12 weeks. A 21-day waiting period applies after the first vaccination before the puppy can travel. This means the practical minimum age for travel is approximately 15 weeks.
Austrian-Specific Requirements
Austria’s Tierschutzgesetz (Animal Welfare Act) imposes additional requirements for dog ownership. Some Austrian states (Bundeslander) require dog owners to complete a dog handling course. Vienna, for example, requires all dog owners to pass a knowledge assessment.
Registration
Upon arrival in Austria, the puppy must be registered with the local municipal authority and enrolled in the Austrian animal database. The microchip number serves as the primary identifier.
